Policies & Procedures

How to organize pharmacy policies so written standards reflect actual daily practice.

Educational information: Requirements can change and may vary by pharmacy type, ownership, service, payer, and jurisdiction. Confirm current requirements with official agencies and qualified professionals.

Policy design

Policies should identify scope, responsible roles, required steps, documentation, escalation, review dates, and references. Avoid generic policies that do not match the pharmacy’s actual workflow.

Core policy domains

Typical domains include dispensing, controlled substances, privacy, quality assurance, recalls, inventory, temperature monitoring, emergencies, security, staffing, immunization services, and incident management.

Maintenance cycle

Review policies when laws, services, technology, staffing, contracts, or workflows change. Document staff training when new or revised procedures are implemented.
